After the build-up of anticipation over the course of at least 6 months, we FINALLY can call ourselves color runners. Orlando was originally scheduled to be one of the last Color Run races of 2012, in early December. However, that date approached quickly and registration still hadn’t opened; we all become admittedly a bit anxious, constantly checking our emails. Finally we learned that the Orlando Color Run would actually be the first of 2013 (awesome!) So we all signed up, and Friday I went out and picked up all of our race packets. Yesterday the day finally came, and was well worth the wait!!
If you don’t know what I am blabbering about, then first of all, you’ve been living under a rock. But I will explain, the Color Run, is as they’ve termed it ‘the happiest 5k on the planet’. This name is so freakin’ appropriate!! Basically you start out in clean, white gear at the start line. Then you run/walk/jog/or dance your way through 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) and throughout the race you go through color stations – pink, blue, orange, yellow – and the volunteers blast you with color. (I believe the color is a corn starch type substance.) At the end you have a really awesome tie-dyed shirt, some great pictures if you took that opportunity, new friends, and awesome memories.
It should be noted that I love a good 5k. 5k’s are fantastic because they provide a setting where beginners and more advanced runners can come together and race in a fun and stress-free environment. And most 5k’s provide donations to local charities, so that’s great too; this particular one donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank. But it should also be noted that while some 5k’s are awesome for setting a new PR or testing your running ability (speed or endurance); this was not the 5k for that! Indeed, it was not even timed. But no one seemed to care. This was the 5k for fun and craziness. This 5k was simply happy. There wasn’t one person I saw without a huge grin on their face. And to be honest, while we may not have gotten our end-times, we still got out of the house and were active for a solid 3-4 hours – what better way to exercise, if not provide some mix up to your training routine for the longer distances you may be planning to do this year.
Enjoy the pictures of me and the rest of the SmOoTh OpErAtOrS!!
